Hello - some info about comments. My colleagues and I will be on a very busy schedule over the next week so won't be able to answer you straight away, but will try our best to start answering when we get back from Georgia next week. Thanks for your patience!

Dear Victor Watkins:
Hope so that you will be in good health by the grace of God. I am working on the Black Bear (Ursus thibetinus) in the Himalayan range of Pakistan and got some strange results hope so that you will consider and raise this situation in the conference.
The Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is threatened species according to the IUCN Red list Data book. Once it was widely distributed throughout the country but now it is only confined to Moist Temperate Forests of the Himalayan Mountains of the Hazara Forest Division and the Azad Jammu Kashmir. Population was estimated up to 234 Black Bears in 1992-1993. According to the reports of Wildlife Department Survey N.W.F.P. Study results showed that in Kohistan there were 98 Black Bears recorded according to the survey reports of Wildlife Department Kohistan in 1998. The present study has designed to collect data on population of the species which was estimated from the local’s interviews and there were no scientific method used which is required for the proper management, conservation and for monitoring. So there is an urgent need required to monitor the Black Bear population, assessment of human-bear conflict in its habitat in the area on pure scientific methods. Habitat loss, Black Bear invasion to cropland increased the human-bear conflict. After the review of reports of WWF, Wildlife Department and other organizations it was concluded that the District Kohistan and Mansehra are the potential sites for the long term research study on the Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus). The current study is unique in the sense that it would be the first effort to calculate the data on black bear and as for as Kohistan is concerned. If at all, study has been done, it would upgrade the previous data. Hope so that you will bring some of the solution as the specie is declining day by day.
with warm regards

Dear Victor Watkins,
I'm Liu from China. And first of all, please forgive my poor English.
I read every single word of your blog, and i appreciate a lot for what you've done to these animals. But i'm just wondering why such a conference is helding in Georgia, this country seems has nothing to do with animal protection.
I'm in a black bear protection volunteer group righ here in China. The main project is solving bear farming issue. Many years has passed, this kind of business still excists. You love these cute animals, then you can work for them. But here,i even can't follow you on facebook or twitter, coz these 2 websites are just blocked. We can't demonstrate in protest,it's illegal. We're waiting for the animal protection law being launched year after year, but so far, still nothing.Sometimes i feel kinda frustrated, don't know where to go.
Each life is a gift of this beautiful planet.I'm a common person from far away.I'll try all my best with my group mates to save more animals here.I genuinelly wish you good work, and i'll keep my concerning on your blog, you ain't alone.God bless you.
Best regards.

It seems highly ironic that the conference is being held in Georgia. A couple of years ago, the plight of bears there - that are just held captive - came to my attention when a friend of mine living there did some extensive travelling. It was quite common to see bears chained up at places like gasoline stations as an 'attraction.' At the time I contacted every wildlife group I could think of and got no help or suggestions on how to bring this situation to the fore. After a lot of research I finally found a guy called Frank ( can't recall surname) who was working for a Dutch branch of a charity out in Georgia and he was having a hard time trying to register captive bears and buy land to make a sanctuary there.
I hope that apart from the important global discussions you are having, the Georgian government can be made to understand that a huge cultural problem is on their doorstep. Thank you for everything you are doing

Hi Victor,
I have been following your blog for a while now and find the work you do fascinating.
I am currently studying at the University of Lincoln in England and am writing my undergraduate dissertation on human-animal relationships with a focus on the bear.
I would really like to ask you a few questions as I believe you would be able to help me with my study.
Please let me know if this would be ok.
Thanks,
Ali Thompson
